Belper’s Wartime Secret Walk

This circular walk looks at Belper's little-known wartime secrets. During the Second World War, Belper played a key role in the Allied victory. However, as those "in the know" never really talked about what they were doing, many people today have no idea of just how important a place it was. Even many of those living in the town at the time have no idea of what was happening right under their noses. This walk tells the story of the secret wartime work that took place in Belper and visits the sites involved.

Distance: 3.5 miles. Duration: 2.5 hours. Price: £5.00

Start point: Shortlands Car Park, Chesterfield Road (opposite St Peter's Church),

Belper, Derbyshire, DE56 1FB. – Start time: 10:00am.

Belper’s Lost Industries Walk

This circular walk around Belper looks at the various lost industries of the world's first cotton mill town. It begins with the cotton mills built by the Strutt family at the very beginning of the Industrial Revolution, with a slight diversion to include the picturesque weir on the river, followed by a look at the houses the family built for their workers. From there, the walk looks at the nail-making industry that pre-dated the arrival of the cotton mills, plus the other industries which once provided employment for the town, including hosiery, confectionery, chemicals and engineering.

Queens Head 5km - Race Distance: 5 k - 2018-12-27 at 11.30am

The Queen's Head pub, Chesterfield Road, Belper, Derbyshire DE56 1FF.

There is NO PARKING at the pub - there are narrow roads in the area but the best bet is to use the Council Car Park at the bottom of Chesterfield Road on the corner of Shortlands that is only about a 500m walk away. It will be much safer there

The course has been revised for 2018 to avoid problems with the buses that seemed to appear in 2017.

The start and finish will be on a flat straight section of the course with good visibility.  The course will still be an out and back 5km course with the kilometres marked but with a change at about 1km to make up the distance lost by moving the start and finish.. The start is a flat 600m run with a downhill stretch passing the 1km mark. Soon after that, you will turn left into Broadholme Lane for a short out and back loop to make up the distance returning to turn righ back on to Crich Lane just before the 2nd kilometre,  after which the road rises again to the turn.

The start and finish are in the same place about 800m from the Queens Head pub in Crich Lane, Belper. Toilets are available and there is only changing available in the toilets. Obviously, beer, soft drinks as well as coffee are available after the race. The Queens Head always has a number of guest beers on sale. The entry fee is £5. The course record is held by Paul Richardson of Charnwood AC who ran 14.41 in 2004. The womens record is held by Debbie Mason of Tipton Harriers who ran 16.41 in 2005.

Race Fee: £5 : £2 FOR 16 & 17 YEAR OLDS –See website for info – http://www.runningwithdavid.com/
