Belper’s Wartime Secret Walk

This circular walk looks at Belper's little-known wartime secrets. During the Second World War, Belper played a key role in the Allied victory. However, as those "in the know" never really talked about what they were doing, many people today have no idea of just how important a place it was. Even many of those living in the town at the time have no idea of what was happening right under their noses. This walk tells the story of the secret wartime work that took place in Belper and visits the sites involved.

Distance: 3.5 miles. Duration: 2.5 hours. Price: £5.00

Start point: Shortlands Car Park, Chesterfield Road (opposite St Peter's Church),

Belper, Derbyshire, DE56 1FB. – Start time: 10:00am.

Queens Head 5km Race

Race Distance: 5 k  2019-12-27 at 11.30am  Derbyshire

Race Address:

The Queen's Head pub, Chesterfield Road, Belper, Derbyshire DE56 1FF.

Details:

The start and finish is in Crich Lane just after its junction with Chesterfield Road and about 5oom from the Queen's Head.  The course is an out and back 5km course with the kilometres marked - 1km and 4km are coincidental as are the 2nd and 3rd km

There is NO PARKING at the pub - there are narrow roads in the area but the best bet is to use the Council Car Park at the bottom of Chesterfield Road on the corner of Shortlands that is only about a 500m walk away. It will be much safer there. Please do not park on the left hand side of Crich Lane as it will affect the views of the timekeepers and recorders.

The start and finish will be on a flat staright section of the course with good visibility.  The course will still be an out and back 5km course with the kilometres marked but with a change at about 1km to make up the distance lost by moving the start and finish.. The start is a flat 600m run with a downhill stretch passing the 1km mark. Soon after that, you will turn left into Broadholme Lane for a short out and back loop to make up the distance returning to turn righ back on to Crich Lane just before the 2nd kilometre,  after which the road rises again to the turn.

Toilets are available and there is only changing available in the toilets. Obviously, beer, soft drinks as well as coffee are available after the race. The Queens Head always has a number of guest beers on sale. The entry fee is £5. The course record is held by Paul Richardson of Charnwood AC who ran 14.41 in 2004. The womens record is held by Debbie Mason of Tipton Harriers who ran 16.41 in 2005.
