Belper’s Wartime Secret Walk

This circular walk looks at Belper's little-known wartime secrets. During the Second World War, Belper played a key role in the Allied victory. However, as those "in the know" never really talked about what they were doing, many people today have no idea of just how important a place it was. Even many of those living in the town at the time have no idea of what was happening right under their noses. This walk tells the story of the secret wartime work that took place in Belper and visits the sites involved.

Distance: 3.5 miles. Duration: 2.5 hours. Price: £5.00

Start point: Shortlands Car Park, Chesterfield Road (opposite St Peter's Church),

Belper, Derbyshire, DE56 1FB. – Start time: 10:00am.

Nature Connection & Mindfulness Walks - 4 Week Programme

A series of guided walks to experience natural mindfulness and nature connection practices for wellbeing. Sundays, 9:30am, from 28th Nov

About this Event

Each weekend you will be given the opportunity to experience mindfulness and nature connection practices during gentle guided walks within a nature reserve in Belper.

The health and wellbeing benefits of experiencing nature mindfully are well documented; some reported benefits include improved relaxation, sleep, immunity and focus.

This winter programme is a chance to invest time in a nature-based antidote to the hustle and bustle of the season. To connect to nature, to re-connect to your true nature.

You will gain a natural wellbeing toolkit, which you will be free and encouraged to try on your own during the week.

You will be guided by Sami from Samphire Natural Wellbeing, a certified Natural Mindfulness guide, ecologist and holistic health practitioner.

The programme consists of four walks, on Sunday mornings at 9:30am, starting on the 28th November. The guided portion will last 45-60 minutes, although you are welcome to stay longer afterwards.

Schedule:

Sun 5/12/21 09:30

Sun 12/12/21 09:30

Sun 19/12/21 09:30

The walks will go ahead come rain or shine, but in the case of severe weather they will be re-scheduled to a following week.

Accessibility Notes:

The reserve has paths, uneven ground and some moderately steep slopes and steps (which can be avoided), however, the pace will be deliberately slow, with stops.

Access from the Market Place free car park has several steps, but the site can be accessed from Mill Lane or Park Road if you wish to avoid steps.

This circular walk around Belper looks at the various lost industries of the world's first cotton mill town. It begins with the cotton mills built by the Strutt family at the very beginning of the Industrial Revolution, with a slight diversion to include the picturesque weir on the river, followed by a look at the houses the family built for their workers. From there, the walk looks at the nail-making industry that pre-dated the arrival of the cotton mills, plus the other industries which once provided employment for the town, including hosiery, confectionery, chemicals and engineering.

Distance: 2.8 miles. Duration: 2 to 2.5 hours. Price: £5.00

Start point: The Triangle (junction of A6 Bridge Street and A517 Bridgefoot),

Belper, Derbyshire. – Start time: 10:00am.

When the faces of one hundred plus people leaving a concert are, without exception, beaming from ear to ear, with many eagerly clutching their newly purchased and signed CDs, it stands a good chance that the evening has been a successful one. Such was the case last night as Ranagri made a triumphant return to St. Edith Hall'. David Pratt FATEA Magazine

Alt folk band Ranagri are 4 Irish and English musicians; combining Voices, Guitar, Bouzouki, Flutes, Whistles, Harp/Electric Harp, Bodhrán/Drums.

Since forming, Ranagri have recorded three studio albums at Grammy Award Winning Record Label Stockfisch Records, with their latest record ‘Playing For Luck’ released in 2019. Acclaimed previous albums are 'Fort of the Hare'. 'The Great Irish Songbook' with pop legend Tony Christie, 'VOICES’ - recorded at Real World Studios and produced by Grammy-nominated producer Graeme Pleeth, and ‘Tradition’, which were both released on Goatskin Records.

Festival performances include Cambridge, Gate to Southwell, Wath, Lyme Folk Weekend, Trinity, Bloom (Dublin) and Purbeck. No strangers to large venues, Ranagri have performed at Birmingham Symphony Hall, Fairfield Halls, The Union Chapel, Buxton Opera House and Camac Harp Festival in France to name a few. Combining their love for world music, they have collaborated with top Indian musician Kuljit Bhamra OBE, and members of Britten Sinfonia at The Bhavan Centre, London.

Touring with Justin Currie (of Del Amitri) at Islington Assembly Hall, Perth Concert Hall, Holmfirth Picturedrome and Cambridge Junction, followed by a tour of Scotland and Germany saw Ranagri writing & recording 'Playing For Luck' released in 2019

2020 - was a very testing year for all, with the cancellation of tours in both Britain and Europe.

Ranagri bunkered down in the studio to write and record their next album TRADITION II, due for release in November 2021

A Dynamic Dru yoga dance class, combining flowing sequences and mudras to energise and empower.

About this event – Dru Yoga Dance:

Dru Dance is a dynamic fusion of Dru Yoga sequences and classical Indian dance movements, combined with mudras (hand gestures), visualisations and powerful affirmations, to create a beautiful flowing sequence to inspiring music.

The class begins with 'flow-ins' to warm up, then the 'dance' is taught phrase by phrase, giving you plenty opportunity to anchor the movements. A cool-down and relaxation to close helps harness the energetics of the movement.

Although a reasonable level of fitness is required, the class is suitable for beginners to Dru Yoga, and modifications are given for the more dynamic poses.

Investment includes:

* Live class teaching, 2 hour class

* A pdf/printed outline of the dance phrases and symbology

* Access to a one-hour recorded class, to help you enjoy the dance at home

* A Dru/Weleda 'goodie bag' for you to take home
