Belper Historical Society Talk - Thatching

At Strutts Centre, Belper  on Wednesday 2nd September- From 7.30pm To 9.00pm

Discover the ancient art of thatching – still very

much alive today through the skill of modern master

Alport Heights Relay

Relay Distance: 3 x 1.8 miles

2020-09-02 at 6.30pm/18.30

Belper Amateurs Cricket Ground, Sandyford Lane, Belper, Derbyshire DE56 2RD

This relay replaces the former Malt Shovel Relay but is over approximately the same distance but there are no hills on the left hand road loop.

The start and finish are within the grounds of the cricket ground but the remainder of the lap is on public roads. There is a gentle uphill section after the first left hand turn into Sandhall Lane but there is a good long downhill stretch before turning into the cricket ground at the end of each lap.

There are toilets, changing, bar and other non-alcoholic drinks available.

The entry fee is £12 per team if entered by 12noon on Thursday or £15 if entered on the night from 5.30pm.

Please note that the Government is not allowing spectators into stadia during August and as such, these games will be played behind closed doors. Should the situation change, we will post updates here and also on our social media platforms.

Belper Recorders Group meet at Strutt's Centre, Derby Road, Belper. Room 20, 10.30am to 12.30pm.

WATER POWER IN BELPER: PAST AND PRESENT - WALK

 BELPER: River Gardens

 Sunday 6th September, 2020

 Door time: 2:00pm, Start time: 2:00pm – All ages

A walk around the waterways of the Belper Mill complex, seeing how the Strutts used water from the River Derwent to power the 11 water wheels. Recent research has uncovered additional information about the original 1776 'South Mill' that continues to use the water today to generate electricity, supplying the national grid. Less than 2 hours. Led by Ian Jackson.

Belper Farmers Markets are held on the 2nd Saturday of every month on the Market Place

from 8.30 a.m. to 1.00 p.m. There is free parking in the adjacent Coppice Car Park.

A walk around this fascinating village which housed framework knitters, Strutt farms, Roman history and even a Fairy Wood. Then a stop off at the community run public house and caf� to look at Roman pottery. More than 2 hours and rural. Walking boots recommended.Led by DawnChurchill.
